SEXOLOGY

Definition A condition informally defined by those who believe it exists (and most of us do), as a psychological addiction to, or dependence on, pornography, which is characterised by obsessive viewing, reading, and thinking about pornography and sexual themes to the detriment of other areas of the viewer’s life, including his–it’s usually his not her–work and social functioning.

Comment Whilst porn addiction has not been formally recognised as a disorder by the American Psychiatric Association and was not included in the DSM 5, a google search on 10.12.2016 yielded

440,000 hits for gambling addiction–a formal DSM 5 category

436,000 hits for shopping addiction–in the DSM 5 under addiction disorder, not otherwise specified and

397,000 hits for porn addiction (and 461,000 for pornography addiction)

This certainly suggests that porn addiction might warrant formal recognition as a disorder a sui generis

Synonyms Overuse of pornography, porn overuse, pornography addiction, pornography overuse, problematic pornography viewing
