The Madonna

Madonna/prostitute syndrome

A termed attributed to the Father of Psychiatry, Sigmund Freud who believed that men divide women into two types:

(1) Nice girls–“Madonnas” who are likened to the Virgin Mary and

(2) Naughty girls who are overtly erotic, uninhibited and available–i.e., “prostitutes”

Per Freud, men choose one woman for love and to have their children–a Madonna and another for sex–a prostitute, believing that nice girls can’t be sexy and sexy girls can’t be nice.

For those who don’t know the difference, Freud’s was a pre-Madonna madonna, not the prima donna Madonna.

Synonyms Madonna whore complex, virgin-whore dichotomy
