PSYCHOLOGY

Definition A term of early 20th century vintage coined by psychiatrist EJ Kempf, for an acute and severe attack of anxiety based on unconscious conflicts involving gender identity suffered by the target of unwanted homosexual advances, which may occur in military barracks, prison, college dormitories, etc.

Comment Such attacks are transient and may be accompanied by delusions, hallucinations, irrational behaviour, or thought and shallow or inappropriate affect. It is a form of anxiety in which the target person becomes greatly agitated, fearing that he/she will inadvertently commit an act viewed as being homosexual in nature, or will be accused of being homosexual.
