Kylie effect

Kylie Minogue

A popular term for the spike in younger women visiting their doctors for breast exams, mammographies and breast biopsies which occurred after the 2005 diagnosis (and treatment) of breast cancer in Australian pop singer, Kylie Minogue, who was 36 at the time.

Several years later, Hollywood’s own Angelina Jolie was found to have a mutated BRCA1 gene, markedly increasing her future risk of breast cancer, which she addressed by undergoing bilateral mastectomy. This permutation of the same theme has been called, drum rolls please, the Angelina Jolie effect.

Synonyms Celebrity effect, Kylie Minogue effect
