Definition A military intelligence officer who, during Argentina’s so-called Dirty War in the late 1970s, was linked to the deaths of 30,000 of his countrymen.

Comment The Escuela de Suboficiales de Mecánica de la Armada–ESMA, his primary base of operations, became a secret concentration camp where up to 5,000 political prisoners were held, tortured and murdered. Astiz infiltrated human rights groups whose members were later kidnapped. He was convicted in absentia in Europe for killing two French nuns held at ESMA and later convicted in 2011 of more crimes and will die in prison. His nickname–Blond Angel of Death refers to his cherub-like appearance.
