padded

PSYCHIATRY

adjective Referring to a structure or surface covered by a layer of cushioning material–e.g., quilting, which is meant to reduce the effect of mechanical force or blows.

Padded is often used in American English (oxymoron noted) as a euphemistic reference to the kit required to control a person undergoing psychotic decompensation, for transportation–e.g., in a so-called padded wagon or during admission to a protective environment–as in a padded room.
