Lorenzo’s Oil

Lorenzo’s Oil

A concoction of oleic and erucic acids said to be useful in treating adrenoleukodystrophy or adrenomyeloneuropathy

Adverse effects Thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, lymphocytopenia, immunosuppression and recurrent infections.

Note: The popular term for this fatty acid brew comes from the same named Hollywood sendup, Lorenzo’s Oil, which suggests to the lay public and sundry non-cognoscenti that it is therapeutically useful for adrenoleukodystrophy, when in fact experts regard the data supporting its efficacy as weak and biased.

Synonym Glyceryl trioleate
