Lake Wobegon

Definition A popular term for the tendency of a group to overestimate its abilities or capabilities or regard group members as above average in relation to others, especially with respect to objective values such as test scores or executive salaries.

Comment The term originates from American humorist and commentator Garrison Keilor’s A Prairie Home Companion; his tag line at the end of the opening monologue is “Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking and the children are above average” The Wobegon effect is in play whenever a group of average people view themselves or their abilities as above average.
