MEDIA & MEDICINE
A British TV drama that premiered in 1960, which followed the adventures of Dr Geoffrey Brent (Ian Hendry), a medical doctor working for the rough Bayswater precinct of the London Metropolitan Police who frequently got caught up in sticky criminal investigations.
Inspired by two popular series of the day, Emergency Ward 10 and Dixon of Dock Green, the half-hour crime drama was created by ABC TV’s Director of Drama, Sydney Newman, to capitalise on the star potential of Ian Hendry, and pull in script writer Julian Bond, who wrote over half of the scripts in collaboration with JJ Bernard, the pseudonym of an actual police surgeon. ABC dropped the series after the initial run due to lukewarm audience response. The show’s writing and star talent were repurposed into the worldwide phenomenon, The Avengers.
