MEDSPEAK

Definition A popular term for tales told by older professionals (or “war horses”) to wide-eyed novices in a particular field.

Pretty much anything relayed by grizzled surgeons, volunteers assisting in natural, humanitarian or other disasters, or missionaries in far-flung outposts qualify as war stories; hyperbole and other forms of embellishment are optional. The term obviously derives from accounts of real wars.
