twigging

MEDSPEAK

Twigging is a popular term for the hyper-specialisation in active branches* of science–e.g., computers and molecular biology, or fragmentation of specialties of medicine into subspecialties and sub-subspecialties, e.g., that of sport medicine into wilderness medicine or emergency medicine into disaster medicine, crowd medicine, and so on.

*For non-native speakers of English, twigs are ramified branches
