Mickey Mouse medicine
Definition A derogatory term for:
(1) Non-patient-oriented duties that impact on physicians’ time–e.g., paperwork, bureaucracies and committees, all of which are necessary to document quality of health care, but do not utilise the skills for which physicians are trained
A “Mickey Mouse physician”, an extension of the above, is one who dedicates himself to “Mickey Mouse medicine”, i.e. “medicrats” or practitioners of medical paperwork. Mickey Mouse in this context is an Americanism for that which is not to be taken seriously, named after Disney’s beloved same named cartoon character.
(2) Types of care which mainstream medical practitioners don’t regard as effective or valid, as in the case of alternative health care
