A popular term for a disease which has a significant impact on one’s lifestyle–e.g., multiple sclerosis or longevity–e.g., AIDS, cancer; incurs high costs–e.g., extensive burns, persistent vegetative state; and/or causes significant and permanent residual morbidity–i.e., loss of eyes or limbs.  

Synonym Catastrophic disease
