diagnosis of exclusion

A disease or condition that is rare and/or unexpected based on a patient’s presentation.

Diagnoses of exclusion are often unresponsive to therapy, and are only seriously considered when all other possible–potentially treatable conditions–e.g., growing pains, idiopathic midline granuloma, sarcoidosis, etc., have been completely excluded.
