Jade Goody effect

ONCOLOGY, PUBLIC HEALTH

A popular term for the increase in colposcopies and requests for cervical screening tests–due to an increase in doctor visits by young women in the UK–which followed the very public 2008 diagnosis–and subsequent death–of advanced cervical cancer* in the 26-year-old British reality TV star, Jade Goody.

*The same cancer that killed Eva Perón (1919-1952). Ms. Goody went on the offensive against the disease, but it had already spread locally to pelvic tissue and metastasised to the liver; she died in March 2009, less than a year after her diagnosis.

Synonyms Goody effect, Jade effect, JADE Goody phenomenon
