Libby Zion
GRADUATE EDUCATION
Libby Zion was a young woman who was admitted to the A&E/ER of a NYC teaching hospital in 1984, whose subsequent death was attributed to inadequate care provided by overworked and undersupervised medical house officers.
Libby was clinically diagnosed as having a viral syndrome with hysterical symptoms, but at autopsy had fulminant bilateral bronchopneumonia. The case became a cause célèbre, and the catalyst for increased supervision of physicians-in-training–residents, especially of those working in emergency departments and a reduced work-load to 80 hours/week.
