Definition A commonly used term referring to the pseudoscientific experiments on twins carried out by Dr Josef Mengele at Auschwitz-Birkenau, a Nazi concentration camp.

An estimated 1500 pairs of twins–the so-called Mengele twins–arrived at the Camp; less than 100 pairs–the CANDLES–Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors–survived; most died horrific deaths.

Comment In twin research, dissimilarities between monozygotic twins are compared with the behavioural variations in non-twin siblings or dizygotic twins.
