ETHNOMEDICINE

A culture-bound (“folk”) syndrome seen in Filipinos, which is loosely equivalent to the Spanish mal de ojo superstition. Usog primarily affects infants and young children who may respond to strangers with fever and convulsions.

Various cures are said to be effective, including boiling the child’s clothing, rubbing the stranger’s saliva on the child’s abdomen, shoulder or forehead, or pinning an amulet on the child’s clothing (image). The only scientific explanation for this unscientific phenomenon is that the stranger somehow stresses the kid.
