A type of circumcision performed by a mohel–a rabbi trained in the procedure–in which blood is sucked by mouth from the fresh open wound.

Whilst this unsterile permutation of circumcision is steeped in tradition, it may transmit herpes to the infants. Rabbi Hershel Schachter, of Yeshiva University’s rabbinical school, claims 15 Jewish babies die every year in the NYC area from herpes transmitted by the haredi circumcision direct mouth-to-bloody-penis-suction (metzitzah b’peh) and the both hospitals and doctors cover it up.
