bone pointing syndrome

A reaction seen in primitive aboriginal societies–in particular, of Australia, in which a witch doctor points a bone at an evil-doer during a ritual. The evil person typically becomes ill thereafter and dies.

An analogous situation in modern society occurs in a patient who, after being told that she has little time remaining in her terminal disease, lapses into a state of apathy and dies.

Synonyms Hexing phenomenon, kurdaitcha, self-willed death
