GLOBAL VILLAGE, SEXOLOGY
Definition Hijras have been narrowly defined as men with a feminine gender identity, who adopt feminine gender roles, wear women’s clothing, and may have had partial surgical sex reassignment.
Comment In Pakistan, hijras may identify themselves as male, female or other and, given the potential for confusion, prefer the term khwaaja sira and slot themselves as transsexual, transgendered–khusra, cross-dresser–zenana or eunuch. Hijras belong to a traditional social organisation, part cult and part caste; they worship the goddess, Bahuchara Mata. Their sexuoerotic role is usually that of a female with men.
