shop floor

MEDSPEAKUK

A highly colloquial term loosely equivalent to bedside or ward.

The phrase “on the shop floor” is one of those manly phrases commandeered from industry, where it is defined as a workplace consisting of the part of a factory housing the machines that produce the company’s widgets, which contrasts with the white collar (administrative) end of the company.
