senior staff nurse

BRITISH MEDICINE

A nurse in the UK who is in the middle of ward hierarchy, above staff nurses, but below charge nurses and ward managers (senior sisters). Senior nurses perform many of the same tasks as staff nurses, but can “pull rank” when they’re in charge of the ward or department area during a shift.

Senior nurses are usually at pay band 5 or 6 under the Agenda for Change (this corresponds to E or F grade under the Whitley system, which was officially retired in 2004, but may still be used in the working parlance).

Synonym Senior nurse
