Redfern Report

Definition The official report from the independent investigation about the Alder Hey organ retention scandal and subsequent inquiry.

Comment The scandal was largely linked to Dutch pathologist Dick van Velzen, chair of foetal and infant pathology at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, who ordered the “unethical and illegal stripping of every organ from every child who had had a postmortem examination” during his tenure at the hospital. The report concluded that he was a “risky” appointment and his work was not monitored. The Report also revealed that over 104,000 organs, body parts and entire bodies of fetuses and stillborn babies were stored at 210 NHS facilities.
