Lord Richard Burdon Haldane

Definition A central tenet of British research policy which holds that once the research budget has been set by government, researchers, not politicians, should decide how to spend the money.

The policy is named for Lord Richard Burdon Haldane (1856–1928), an influential Scottish Labour politician, lawyer, and philosopher.
