behind the counter medicine

A generic term for a medicine which is dispensed by a pharmacist/chemist (theoretically after a discussion with the pharmacist, but in practice, not always) without a medically-qualified doctor’s prescription. Such medications include different strengths, chemicals and sizes that may cause interactions or require some form of instruction by the pharmacist.

Synonym Pharmacy-only medication
