lethal dose

(1) LDLO The lowest dose of a chemical introduced by a route other than inhalation, reported to have caused death in humans or animals

(2) LD50 The lowest dose of a chemical which would be expected to cause death in 50% of a defined experimental animal population; a dose of a toxin, virus or any substance that is lethal to all the members of a species within a specified or well-defined time period

Concern for animal welfare has made the LD50 test unpopular; it may ultimately be abandoned completely Nature 1991; 253:489
