TOBACCO

Definition A type of cigarette commonly–up to 50% of Indian tobacco consumption–smoked in India and South Asia, which consists of flake tobacco rolled in a tendu leaf. Beedis are a poor man’s cigarette and cost five to 20 cents/pack

Comment Beedis are of interest in occupational medicine, as they are manufactured as a cottage industry which exposes workers to high levels of cotinine. Beedi manufacture is acknowledged to be dangerous to the 3 million (of which 325,000 are children) workers who produce them–but not eating for lack of money is worse.

Synonyms Bidi, biri
