Definition A self-explanatory term for an infant born to a crack cocaine-addicted mother, who are often has a low birth weight, and major birth defects, especially neurological or of the respiratory tract.
Such babies are 4 times more likely to be premature, more often suffer SIDS and, given the mothers’ high morbidity and mortality, are often in foster care.
*In some urban settings, up to 50% of children are in foster care, largely attributed to crack. Up to 30% of babies admitted to neonatal ICUs in some US inner city hospitals have crack-abusing mothers; these infants fare far worse than even “cocaine babies” and have a characteristic trembling likened to a delicately shaking cup of tea.
