brown heroin

SUBSTANCE ABUSE

(1) A contaminated heroin that originated in Mexico in 1974, which was linked to folliculitis and subcutaneous nodules, musculoskeletal hypersensitivity, fever, paraspinal myalgias, arthralgias, periarticular tenderness

Side effects Hypergammaglobulinaemia, biological false positive reaction for syphilis.

The colour was due to additives, including procaine and opium-processing contaminants–noscapine, papaverine, which caused a brownish discolouration and imparted a viscid consistency to the product.
