sunshine unit

RADIATION SAFETY

Definition A unit used to measure the amount of radioactivity produced by strontium-90* in a subject’s body.

Comments One sunshine unit (SU) is equal to one picocurie from 90Sr/gram of calcium (37 becquerels/kg) in bone.

*90Sr, a radionuclide found in nuclear fallout, is absorbed in humans and incorporated into bone as if it were calcium. The term was promoted by the US Department of Defense, presumably to make radioactive fallout seem more user friendly, which triggered ridicule from comics, most vocally, George Carlin. It got 5330 hits on 18/02/2014 compared to 1740 hits for strontium unit.

Synonym Strontium unit
