white nose syndrome

An infection by a fungus, Geomyces destructans, which is believed to have affected more than 5 million bats in North America. It is characterised by a whitish overgrowth on the muzzles and wings of bats, especially when hibernating; it has an up to 95% mortality rate.

Bats play critical roles in the ecosystem and in agriculture by eating crop-destroying insects; the US Forest Service has estimated that over 1 million kg of bugs will go uneaten due to white nose disease.
