Mallophaga

ENTOMOLOGY

A suborder of biting lice containing 2800 species. They are wingless, hemimetabolous–simple metamorphosis with no pupa, ectoparsitic—i.e., live on the outer surface of their hosts (mostly birds, but also some mammals including humans). Mallophaga measure 0.5 to 10 mm in length, are dorsoventrally flattened, have reduced compound eyes and no ocelli.
