The Concise Dictionary of Modern Medicine
Cover, Concise Dictionary of Modern Medicine
It doesn’t take medical students long to realize how much jargon they need to learn before becoming fluent in MedSpeak. The Concise Dictionary of Modern Medicine is especially useful for those beginning their education and training in medicine. It is the most complete book on the market for learning the new language of medicine and was written by a doctor for med students and doctors at all levels of their careers.
The Concise was intended to address the gap between what one finds in the Dorland’s Illustrated Medical Dictionary (and its brethren, Mosby’s, Stedman’s and Taber’s medical dictionaries) and the slang- and jargon-rich language of the bench and bedside.
I published the bulk of this work in 2005 with McGraw-Hill as The Concise Dictionary of Modern Medicine. You can get a hard (paper) copy on eBay as either a legitimate used copy for a couple of bucks, or you can get a pirated version (they even copied my cheesy cover image), also on eBay, for about $50. I suppose someone in China, India or Pakistan is making money off the sweat of my brow…oh well…as they say, it is what it is.
The reader familiar with the author, his work and this website will know that my focus has been the development of a rapidly-expanding database which, as of today, 9 August, 2018, has 188,879 entries (compared to the Dorland’s 125,000) and an additional 193,087 searchable terms, making it 3 times larger in terms of raw numbers than that venerated work.
With the able assistance of my webmaster and database guru, Kent Hummel, we have begun releasing parts of that database, details of which the reader will find on the homepage. The raison d’être for performing this labour of love is explained at length on the pages entitled Medical Dictionaries in the 21st Century and A New Major Medical Dictionary. Readers interested in an eBook version of the Concise Dictionary of Modern Medicine can link here and download it for Kindle, iBooks or Nook.
