A popular term for an acute abdomen which requires surgical intervention–e.g., acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, acute diverticulitis with bowel obstruction, cancer, acute vascular disease–e.g., infarction, abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Differential diagnosis, acute medical abdomen Acute intermittent porphyria, addisonian crisis, black widow spider bites, herpes zoster, lead poisoning, acute MI, pneumonia, PE, sickle cell crisis, uremia, etc

Note: While acute abdomen and surgical abdomen are listed as synonyms in some medical dictionaries, not all acute abdomens are appropriately treated by surgery
