metastasectomy
ONCOLOGY, SURGERY
A popular term for the surgical excision of one or more foci of metastatic malignancy.
Notes:
(1) 65% of patients are alive 2 years after metastaectomy of liver masses; 25% have no detectable recurrence; the outcome is improved if hepatic arterial infusion of 5-FU plus IV 5-FU is added to the regimen.
(2) Because lymphoproliferative disorderss–e.g., lymphomas are often multifocal and don’t respond well to excision, metastasectomy is used for carcinoma, soft tissue sarcoma, melanoma and other solid tumours, but not for lymphomas
