A popular nonspecific term used to describe an erythematous, acutely inflamed oropharynx (“strep throat”), which is seen in various bacterial infections–e.g., Streptococcus pyogenes, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bordetella pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae, as well as viral infections
