Definition A popular term for violent or “explosive” vomiting without antecedent nausea, or vomiting at the peak of maximum inspiration without the usual rhythmic hyperactivity of the respiratory muscles associated with retching*.

*Diaphragmatic spasms that typically precede vomiting

Aetiology Gastric outlet obstruction–e.g., (hypertrophic) pyloric stenosis, hiatus hernia, gastric volvulus, duodenal atresia, duodenal stenosis, jejunal atresia and superior mesenteric artery syndrome; it may also be triggered by increased intracranial pressure, as occurs in meningitis in young children. 

Synonyms Cerebral vomiting, explosive vomiting, forceful vomiting
