Achilles reflex

NEUROLOGY

Definition A muscle reflex evoked by tapping on the Achilles tendon when the foot is dorsiflexed which, if intact–as with normal S1 and S2 nerve roots–results in a plantar flexion of the foot.

Causes of Achilles reflex attenuation Sciatica and sciatic nerve pathology, hypothyroidism, disc herniation, peripheral neuropathy.

Synonyms Achilles tendon reflex, akle jerk, ankle jerk reflex, ankle reflex
