virtual biopsy

A term of art for the use of an imaging modality–e.g., ultrasonography, functional MRI, or virtual colonoscopy–coupled with a probe-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscope–pCLE, an imaging tool, to localise a mass and assess its physical features

pCLE is 2 mm in diameter and can magnify a “bump” seen by colonoscopy up to 1000 fold. It is reported to be 91% accurate in determining whether the bump is benign–and doesn’t need to be biopsied–or possibly malignant
