(1) A descriptive term for the radiologic appearance of a layered centrifugal periosteal reaction, caused by tumour extension, mineralisation (sclerosis), and formation of coarse divergent filiform periosteal spicules in the surrounding tissue perpendicular to the periosteum. The pattern is classically seen in bone infiltration by typical and parosteal osteosarcoma,

which usually evoke a minimal periosteal reaction. The changes are not pathognomonic and may also be seen in Ewing sarcoma

(2) The adjective sunburst also refers to irradiating spiculation of the iliac bone around the acetabulum in osteopathia striata (OMIM:300373).
