picture frame appearance

A descriptive term for vertebral involvement by Paget’s disease of bone, in which an isolated vertebral body is enlarged and centrally osteoporotic, and surrounded by a rim of osteosclerotic cortex, involving the anterior and posterior margins, and vertebral end-plates, and thus fancifully likened to a picture frame. Despite the increased density of the bone, it is prone to fractures.
