nuchal scan of early fetus


A screening procedure for identifying fetuses with Down syndrome, consisting of an ultrasound scan of a fetus to identify nuchal translucency–due to oedema, which is assessed at the end of the 1st trimester, and nuchal fold thickening, which is assessed at the end of the 2nd trimester.

Increased nuchal fluid and tissue thickening is seen in up to two thirds of fetuses with Down syndrome.
