plain AP film with egg-shaped heart
A popular term for a globoid cardiac shadow seen on a plain A-P chest film of young children with transposition of the great vessels. Related findings by imaging include a narrowed mediastinum, a large ventricular silhouette and a small “waist”, due to an abnormal location of the aorta, which lies directly in front of the pulmonary artery. The re-routing of the cardiac plumbing is associated, by physiologic necessity, with a ventricular septal defect. Uncorrected, congestive heart failure ensues.
