Helsinki Criteria

Proposed criteria for diagnosing and attributing certain lung and pleural disorders to asbestos exposure, which arose from consensus conferences by international experts held in Helsinki in 1997 and 2004.

Comment A group of internationally recognised pulmonary pathologists including haematoxylin heavyweight Andrew Churg questioned the Helsinki Group’s agenda, data, and conclusions from the first two pow-wows. A third and final conference was held in February 2014 in Espoo, Finland, which modified the trenchant rhetoric to match scientific reality. The Helsinki Criteria are now cast in stone.
