thousand yard stare
A popular term for an unfocused dazed look seen in a person who has suffered severe acute psychological distress and is coping with that stress by dissociating himself from the event, circumstances and participants.
The emotionless gaze of shell shock has been recognised since the time of Sophocles, who described it in ancient Greek soldiers. Both (1000-yard, 2000-yard) terms are in active use.
