A popular portmanteau* for a disorder characterised by a seemingly compulsive drive to spend large blocks of time tanning under the sun or in a tanning bed, due in part to self-perception that one is too pale.

While it is not recognised as an addiction by the American Psychiatric Association, some data (J Am Acad Dermatol, 54(4): p. 709-711, 2006) suggest that tanning releases endorphins, and opioid blockers can trigger a withdrawal syndrome.
