Definition A popular term for the assessment by a potential suicide completer of a place where he or she plans to commit suicide, to identify any problems that might prevent completion. The rehearsal also helps incorporate the upcoming event into the potential completer’s thinking and facilitate acceptance of the event’s inevitability. Suicide rehearsals are regarded as high-risk psychiatric emergencies. 

Characteristics of suicide rehearsal

• Guarded patient

• Behavioral enactment of a suicide method

• Lethal means

• Presumptive acute, high risk of suicide

• Severe mental illness (not invariably present)

• Suicide attempt often within hours or days

• Rehearsal usually covert

• Rehearsal event or multiple events
