opiophobia

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Definition A term referring to the unwillingness that physicians have for prescribing opiates to patients with severe pain, due to concern that they might become addicted to opiates in the future.

Comment Opiophobia appears to be unwarranted: One study found that 4 of 12,000 patients given opioids for acute pain became addicted. Another reviewed 38 chronic painers who received opioids for 4 to 7 years; only 2 became addicted, and both had a history of drug abuse
