Definition A zone of space–ranging from direct contact to less than an arm’s length–in which people operate under specific social—typically romantic—situations.

Intimate distance may be:

(1) Close or actual contact–defined as ≤ 15 cm/6 inches, reserved for lovers, very close friends, and immediate family members, or

(2) Far–15-50 cm/6-18 inches, close enough to clasp the other person
